as far as the dude goes, i definitely dont think he wanted to "draw attention to himself" ... or the other thing you said. i can't remember. it seems like a selfless thing to me... like he truely wanted to use his body as an instrument for witnessing. i definitely agree with the whole tattooing becomes mutilation after a while thing. i never thought about that.
